Given the frigid temperatures we’ve been experiencing lately in D.C., now’s a great time to tackle some home maintenance measures that will keep your property in solid condition through a long winter season!
Here are some tips:
1. Check and change heating system filters. Monitor water levels in your boiler and do not let them fall too low.
2. Safeguard against frozen pipes by turning off and draining outdoor faucets; insulating pipes where possible; & keeping the thermostat at a steady temperature.
3. Make sure you have a snow blower in good working order or sturdy shovel to clear walkways.
4. Inspect the exterior of your home for signs of ice dams, which can damage gutters, shingles, and siding as well as home, paint, floors, and insulation if water leaks into the home.
5. Buy ice melt but use sparingly in order to protect pets and preserve foliage.
6. If you own a portable generator, have it serviced and keep fuel and motor oil on hand.
7. Have emergency supplies on hand in the event of a major winter storm: canned food & bottled water; gas for the snow blower; a first-aid kit & any medicines you may need.
