The beginning of December is an excellent time to make sure your home is prepared for harsh winter weather. Here is a checklist of items you can use to safeguard your property for the season:
Grounds:
*Check that your snow blower is in good working order.
*Stock up on ice melt (look for brands free of salt or chloride).
*Regularly inspect the exterior of your home for signs of ice dams, which can wreak havoc on your paint, floors, and insulation. Consider buying a roof rake to remove fresh snow from your roof after a storm.
*Shut off and drain outdoor faucets.
Interior:
*Check and change filters on your heating system.
*Safeguard against frozen pipes: insulate where possible; keep the cabinets below sinks open to let warm air in on cold nights; keep the thermostat at a steady temperature; and if you go away, set the thermostat to a minimum of 55 degrees.
*Have your generator serviced.
*Stock up on emergency supplies so that you are prepared in the event of a winter storm.
