With Amazon’s highly anticipated HQ2 decision expected any day, a new analysis by the Urban Institute found that DC would need 275,000 additional housing units by 2025 to keep up with the concomitant demand. As a result, the city would face a deficit of 105,000 housing units if development continues at its expected rate.

A slowdown in construction that started during the recession of 2008, job growth, and an influx of high-income residents have resulted in a housing shortage in DC. If Amazon selects the district as the site of its HQ2, it will bring thousands of jobs and additional tax revenue, but local policymakers will need to figure out a solution to the lack of housing for city residents.
